A municipally-owned utility was faced with the challenge of rehabilitating a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) property as part of a state cleanup program.  Apex performed the site assessment, risk characterization and remediation activities that enabled redevelopment of the property.  This former brownfield will become the location of a new electrical substation and ground-mounted solar energy generating facility.

The City of New Bedford boasts the largest commercial fishing port (by dollar volume) in the U. S.  Due to lack of maintenance and repair on the harbor and port facilities for over 40 years, the city was faced with the possibility of having to close the port.  Apex implemented a plan for dredging and disposal of the sediment that decreased cleanup costs from $ 200-400 per cubic yard to $ 75 per cubic yard saving the city up to $ 49 million. Apex’s success on the project is evidenced by the commercial expansion of the port and recent inclusion as a regular stop on for a major cruise line.

  • Public - Case Study 3

In an effort to expand the south campus of a prestigious university, the school acquired vacant land from the National Parks Service. It was discovered that a portion of the property previously housed a fueling and vehicle service facility. After Apex piloted an investigation, we determined that the existing structures remained below grade and petroleum heavily impacted the property.  Utilizing in-house capabilities, Apex installed a sophisticated shoring system and conducted the removal and disposal of 15 underground storage tanks (USTs) and more than 2,000-tons of petroleum-impacted soils.  Upon completing the removal activities and a stringent confirmatory sampling event, Apex expedited a site closure for the property facilitating the purchase and expansion of the campus.
