  • Energy - Case Study 1

For more than five years, Apex has been performing on-site inspections at more than 700 airports for an aviation fuel provider to ensure independent operators are maintaining purchased fuels to industry standards. Our team of scientist and technicians—strategically located across the U.S.—inspect fuel quality, filtering and mechanical conditions, and general record keeping for sites in 48 States. With nearly 2,000 inspections performed, we make use of inspection data easy through an online database accessed by our client and the inspected facilities.

Our team of health and safety experts serve as full time, outsourced construction safety officers for one of the world’s leading suppliers of advanced hydroelectric equipment, technology, and services.  While our client is busy making clean power generation possible, Apex is on-site handling the details necessary to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory health and safety requirements.

  • Pipelines - Case Study 2

Apex was retained to manage all environmental tasks associated with the acquisition of 49 petroleum terminals in 15 states with an asset value over $ 500 million.  Working to ensure the success of this transaction, we supported negotiations between seller and buyer, developed and presented options for sharing environmental liability, and produced a transition plan to transfer operational permits and compliance responsibilities.

  • Energy - Case Study 4

A leading power company planned to construct a 1,200 MW power plant in comprised of four gas-fired combined cycle turbines and associated equipment.  Apex performed a fatal flaw analysis evaluating the proposed site location and prepared the Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) air permit application.  We worked with our client to develop the site layout, prepare emission rate calculations, and conduct the regulatory applicability analysis and Best Available Control Technology (BACT) review.  Apex worked with regulatory agencies to expedite the permit application review and negotiated permit provisions, and we collaborated with our client and the agency to respond to EPA comments.  Through our intense efforts, we were able to obtain the PDS permit in 10 months, enabling our client to begin construction ahead of schedule.

  • Energy - Case Study 5

To ensure compliance with the state regulatory agency, a major refinery needed to submit a comprehensive air quality analysis (AQA) quantifying the impacts from refinery maintenance, startup, and shutdown (MSS) operations and routine refinery operations.  Apex prepared and submitted a comprehensive AQA that described the modeling approach and presented results.   Despite the regulatory agency requiring substantial revisions to AQAs submitted by various other consulting firms for this client, the AQA Apex submitted was approved with minimal comments and requests for additional information.

  • Energy - Case Study 6

Natural gas producers face multiple regulatory and public relations challenges.  Our client hired us to respond to anti-drilling groups concerned about potential high levels of benzene at facilities in two natural gas production areas.  To assess the impact on local air quality, Apex conducted ambient air quality sampling at sites predicted to have the highest concentrations of emissions.   The results of the testing concluded that harmful levels of benzene and other pollutants were not being emitted, and these results have withstood all challenges and reduced liability for natural gas producers.
